The Tempest at the Globe

Did Shakespeare write Shakespeare?  Over the years many poeple  have wanted to say that the actor Shakespeare could not have written the plays.  The Tempest twists that elitist argument on its head: what noble could have written a play with so many allusions to the stage and stagecraft?

Shakespeare’s Globe in London uses the simplest of technology and staging.  This gives the speech of Prospero- “we are such stuff as dreams are made of”- a clear relevance within its context.  We are invited not to suspend disbelief but to reflect on the nested meanings in the phrase:

-Prospero referring to himself

-the actor referring to the character he is playing

-the actor referring to himself as an actor

-the actor including all of the audience in “the globe”.
